Just a few more weeks of hard work and then the summer holidays will start at the school where Held@Home is helping. A number of children have made great strides and it is great fun to see and hear how well they master the Dutch language. For others it is still a big barrier to speak Dutch and write the words. But all the kids have definitely moved up 1 or 2 levels in recent months.
Held@Home has been able to help at a time when this was really necessary because teachers (temporarily) dropped out because of Corona, but also because home education is not possible for these children and backlogs were incurred. This brought an even bigger gap between the Dutch language and the mother tongue. The children also received some extra attention and there was room for the teacher to give a number of children some specific attention.
But all things come to an end and many of these children will leave the classroom in a few weeks to enter mainstream education. A number of children will also stay for a while and come back again next year to eventually come to the point of enrolling in regular schools.
Held@Home will this school year say goodbye to the children and the weekly help to the school with a heavy heart. Of course we will do that with a present and some goodies and who knows, maybe a nice outing with the children may come. All in all a good time to remember and we are grateful to be able to help during this period.
